Group Leader

 Eivind Valen

Eivind Valen did his PhD in Bioinformatics at the University of Copenhagen under Albin Sandelin and Anders Krogh. He later moved to Harvard University and The Broad Institute where he did his postdoc in the lab of Alex Schier.

Postdocs

Kornel Labun

Kornel has finished his PhD titled “In silico design and analysis of targeted genome editing with CRISPR” in 2020 at the ValenLab, University of Bergen. Currently working as a postdoctoral fellow focused on translation in metastasis. His research interests include Nanopore long-read sequencing and CRISPR.

Preeti Kute
Preeti has obtained her Master’s Degree in Bioinformatics and Biotechnology from the University of Pune, India. Further, she did her PhD in molecular neuroscience from the Institute for Cell Science and Regenerative Medicine, Bangalore, India. During her PhD, she worked at understanding the paradoxical translation occurring downstream of NMDAR receptors at neuronal synapses. As a postdoctoral researcher, she continues her work on translation regulation, especially from the perspective of 5’UTRs.

Jan Inge Øvrebø

Jan Inge studied molecular biology at the University of Bergen, where he completed a PhD degree on cell cycle regulation in Oikopleura dioica. As a postdoc, he continued studying cell cycle regulation and protein translation, using Drosophila genetics, at the Huntsman cancer institute, USA. Jan Inge is currently using Nanopore sequencing to study 5’UTR modifications.

Teshome Tilahun Bizuayehu

Teshome Tilahun Bizuayehu has two master degrees from Ghent University and Nord University. He did his PhD at Nord University on regulation and targeting of microRNAs during development and has worked on characterizing small non-coding RNAs.

PhD students

Adnan Niazi

Adnan has a masters degree in Human Media Interaction from the University of Twente, Netherlands. After graduation, he worked as a research assistant at the Department of Artificial Intelligence, Radboud University Nijmegen. Adnan is currently pursing his PhD at the Valen lab. His research focuses on developing computational approaches for studying RNA using Nanopore sequencing

Håkon Tjeldnes

Håkon Tjeldnes holds a bachelor degree in both molecular biology and bioinformatics and masters degree in bioinformatics from the University of Bergen. He currently pursues his PhD working on the identification of upstream open reading frames and their downstream effects in a variety of human cell-types and tissues.
