New study highlights the role of blood proteins in communication between tissues in heart disease

Using data from the STARNET study, CBU’s Sean Bankier and the team examined the impact of plasma protein variation on gene expression in cardiometabolically relevant tissues, including liver, adipose tissue, blood, skeletal muscle, and the arterial wall. One of the key findings of this study was that plasma proteins were found to be strongly linked to the activity of gene regulatory networks (GRNs), in particular GRNs comprised of genes spanning multiple tissues. Many of these proteins and GRNs have been implicated in key biological processes and different cardiometabolic and cardiovascular diseases. These findings bring new insight to the possible role of plasma proteins in tissue signalling with potential implications for tissue-informed biomarker discovery.
Bankier wishes to thank all of his co-authors, in particular Prof Tom Michoel at the University of Bergen and Prof Johan LM. Björkegren at Karolinska Institutet.
