CBU is a collaboration between two faculties and five departments of the University of Bergen, namely the Faculty of Science and Technology (Department of Informatics, Department of Chemistry, and Department of Biological Sciences) and the Faculty of Medicine (Department of Biomedicine, and Department of Clinical Science).

CBU is hosted by the Department of informatics but CBU staff are hired at one of the five departments. CBU performs theoretical and applied computational biology research developing novel methodologies to address fundamental questions in life science. Through the Department of Informatics, CBU offers bioinformatics programs at the bachelor, master, and PhD level.

CBU also coordinates the course portfolio of computational biology courses across departments, which students from other degrees are welcome to take.

Strengthening of CBU (2017-2026)

Within the frame of a major investment in bioinformatics (ca.17M euros) from the University of Bergen, Bergen University Hospital and Trond Mohn Research Foundation, CBU received financial support to hire five new research groups. The aim was to strengthen the excellent research activities and coordinate education within computational biology per se, while also strengthening the collaborations between CBU and its participating departments.
