The interplay between environmental conditions, and microbial activity and populaion dynamics
Microorganisms are very small, but also very numerous. They inhabit a wide range of habitats, including soils, the global ocean, clouds, hydrothermal systems, and deep sea sediments. Combined, they play i key role in the global elemental cycling and Earths climate. Microorganims are central parts of numerous biotecnological applications and central for the functioning of all ecosystems.
In the Dahle group, we try to understand the fundamental principles dictating the interplay between environmental conditions and microbial activity: How are microbial communies shaped by the environment and how are environments shaped by microbes? To address our questions we use a systems biology approach where we combine numerical model development, model validation, model simulations, evolution, field studies and controlled experiments, and bioinformatics analyses of ‘-omics’ data.
