Group Leader

Harald Barsnes is a professor at the Department of Biomedicine and a group leader at the Computational Biology Unit at the Department of Informatics. The main focus of his research is the development of user-friendly open-source bioinformatics tools that enable and empower researchers to analyze and share their own data.

PhD candidates

Yehia Mokhtar Farag got his M.Sc. in Bioinformatics from the University of Bergen. He is currently a PhD candidate in the Barsnes group focusing on web-based interactive visual analysis of omics data. He is main developer behind the CSF Proteome Resource – an online repository of mass spectrometry based proteomics experiments on human cerebrospinal fluid.

Kenneth Alejandro Valerio Aguilar obtained his master’s degree in molecular biology at the University of Debrecen in Hungary. He is now a PhD candidate in the Barsnes group and part of the PROHITS project. His main work is related to the analysis and visualization of thermal proteome profiling data from thermophilic prokaryotes.

Previous members

Henrik Øvrebø Søgaard obtained his Master’s degree in the Barsnes Group in 2023, working on how to enhance protein identification through automated search parameter selection.

Jannie Nguyen obtained her Master’s degree in the Barsnes Group in 2023, evaluating protein biomarker candidates for neurological diseases using mass spectrometry-based proteomics.

Markus Almendral Berggrav obtained his Master’s degree in the Barsnes Group in 2023, working on automating the extraction of proteomics data from scientific publications.

Ingrid Liabakk Eriksen obtained her Master’s degree in the Barsnes Group in 2022, focused on exploring the potential of citizen science in proteomics.

Ragnhild Reehorst Lereim was a PhD candidate in the Barsnes group from 2016 to 2021, within the field of proteomics and cell-biology. She successfully defended her thesis in June 2021.

Bram Burger was a PhD candidate in the Barsnes group from 2016 to 2021, working on the statistical analysis of proteomics data. He successfully defended his thesis in June 2021.

Carlos Horro was a chief engineer in the Barsnes group from 2016 to 2020 working on the analysis of proteomics data in a web-based context, including tools such as SearchGUI, PeptideShaker, NeLS and Galaxy.

Astrid Guldbrandsen was a Postdoc in the Barsnes group from 2017 to 2020 working on the CSF Proteome Resource, in addition to performing related wet lab experiments.

Christoffer Hjeltnes Støle obtained his Master’s degree in the Barsnes Group in 2018, focusing on the visualization and sharing of data from the Norwegian Mother and Child Cohort Study.
